The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through: -Retrieving information; -Inferring and deducing; -Analyse the writer’s use of language. The lesson focuses particularly on Boyne’s use of language devices to affect the reader throughout this section of the text. There is a particular focus on the way in which he builds tension throughout the bottle of wine scene. There’s a lot of content in the resource (23 slides in total) and in the past I have utilised this material over two or even three lessons. The lesson focuses particularly on developing students’ understanding of Bruno’s naivety, which is evident in his discussions with Shmuel. This is achieved through several retrieval and inference activities. The students then focus on Boyne’s use of language in describing Shmuel. For this deeper thinking activity, an essay template (with embedded structure strip) is provided to offer guidance and support for students. This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills through a reading of the opening section of Humphrey Carpenter’s ‘Mr Majeika.’ The resource pack includes the extract and all of the activities for the session, which the class are guided through via a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The session is best suited for children in upper KS1/ lower KS2. I originally used this with Year 2-3 children, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The session is also suitable for home/ remote learning.
